Enjoy Explosive Action At This Famous Maui Blow Hole
Situated on the island's rocky northwestern coast, the Nakalele blowhole offers a spectacular year-round display of the Pacific Ocean's force and beauty. The explosion of seawater shooting through a gap in the lava coastline offers visitors a chance to experience nature at its fiercest. Every few minutes, depending on surf and wind conditions, you can observe a geyser shooting up to 100 feet in the air along the shoreline.
A Nakalele blowhole hike is the best way to observe this natural phenomenon, but be sure to stay on the dry rocks. Visitors who get too close have been sucked into the hole, and some have even drown after disappearing into it.
How far aways should I stay when I am visiting the Nakalele Blowhole?
The Nakalele blowhole is one of Mother Nature's most impressive marvels. The combination of ocean swell, tidal current and wind combine to create a surge that powerfully forces its way through the lava tube, resulting in an impressive geyser. If you're there early in the morning, you may even see a rainbow in the spray. However, the receding swell also has the capability of sucking unwary visitors back into the blowhole. A good rule of thumb for safely experiencing the Nakalele blowhole is to stay on the dry rocks nearby. Never stand directly next to or over the blowhole, as some visitors have died this way.
How do I find the Nakalele Blowhole?
It's easy to find this unofficial wonder of the world. Start your adventure in the city if Kapalua and drive north for approximately 8 miles. When you see the mileage marker 38.5, park nearby and look for the trailhead. While there are numerous other trails that criss-cross the area and eventually take you to the blowhole, the mile 38.5 trailhead is the safest. As an added benefit, this trail will also take you past Maui's famous heart-shaped rock. Once you get to the blowhole, turn around to see the heart-shaped hole that perfectly frames the mountain, seashore and ocean view. Don't forget to snap a few pics of this Instagram-worthy location.
